Introducing the Bayeux Tapestries at The British Museum

London’s British Museum has a way of elegantly showcasing key moments in history and the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition is the perfect example of this. A beautifully simple showcase, of a world renowned iconic tapestry really allows it to shine. In a way this feels similar to the British Museum itself – a bright, light filled space showcasing incredible architecture and providing a beautiful blank canvas of sorts for the contents it houses. To host a dinner or reception in the Museum’s Great Court while guests explore this standout exhibition in the luxury of a small group, creates a very special evening.
When a gathering sits alongside an exhibition of this stature, attendance naturally lifts: guests are drawn not simply to a venue but to an exclusive experience within an iconic venue. When the evening offers not just the chance to visit one of London’s well known heritage venues, after hours, when the crowds have dispersed, but to view an exhibition that is the talk of the town, we find it becomes an easy ‘yes’ from guests. We genuinely see an uptick in acceptances hence why so many of the events we run alongside exhibitions are client focussed.

We’ve had such fun designing events inspired by the tapestry. Iconic not only for its scale and age, but for the way it tells a story in motion, the tapestry’s scenes of preparation, voyage and triumph are rendered in great detail and with incredible clarity, still to this day. In design terms, the tapestry provides a rich, soft palette which feels calm and inviting. We take cues from its natural dyes and earthy tonality — soft ochres, woad blues, deep greens and warm reds — translating them with quiet medieval references rather than overt theming. Materials feel tactile and textured – we’ve been inspired a lot by the nature of the stitches and the texture of the tapestry fabric.
Operationally, hosting within an active exhibition context requires care. Timing matters — giving space for private viewing but also that the event space feels inviting and engaging, encouraging guests to stay beyond the private view. Our role is to harmonise these elements so the evening flows with ease and respect for the collection.
An event beside the Bayeux Tapestry is a unique experience and one that people will note for years. For hosts, it elevates attendance and engagement. For guests, it becomes a night they remember — beautifully staged, culturally grounded, and unmistakably London.
